Does rain clean solar panels?

Cleaning solar panel with brush

This is by far one of the most debated topics I have come across when it comes to cleaning solar panels. When I first started my business, I would knock on people doors and many would tell me the rain cleaned them and anything else wasn't necessary. Now that I've been doing this for awhile, I'd probably challenge them to a "clean-off", where they spray the hose, and I use my solar panel cleaning brush, and see if they are able to get it half as clean as I do. If I don't scrub every inch of every panel several times with a brush, you could see from far away the spots that were missed. Not only is there dirt and pollen that accumulates but there's dried bugs and bird droppings among other things that even the most aggressive rain can't remove.

Does this mean that rain has no effect whatsoever? I wouldn't go that far, but at best it moves the top layer of dust farther down the solar panel. Just like we wouldn't rely on rain to wash our car, we can't rely on it to give solar panels the clean they need in order to operate at peak efficiency or keep them maintained.
